Extinguishers

How to use a fire extinguisher

  • Keep an exit behind you
  • Pull the pin
  • Aim at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep side to side
  • Evacuate if the fire grows or becomes unsafe

Placement guidance
Keep extinguishers visible, easy to reach, and near an exit path rather than buried inside a cabinet.

Fire Blanket

How to use a fire blanket

  • Pull the blanket out using the straps
  • Protect your hands behind the folded edge
  • Cover the flames fully
  • Turn off the heat source only if safe
  • Leave the blanket in place until the area cools

Best use
Fire blankets are most useful for small contained flames, especially in kitchens.

Placement guidance
Mount the blanket near the kitchen or cooking area, but not so close to the stove that it becomes unsafe to reach during a fire.

Smoke Detectors

Where to place smoke alarms

  • Near bedrooms
  • In hallways
  • On each level of the home
  • Away from cooking fumes that can trigger false alarms

Why they matter
Smoke alarms help warn you early, often before a fire grows.

Important note
These products are for early-stage fire response. If a fire spreads quickly or the area becomes unsafe, evacuate immediately and contact emergency services.
